You’ve finally done it, you’ve started a business! All of your hard work is about to pay off, you just need to find a way to get yourself out there. In this day and age, you know that you need to build a website. How hard can it be to create one yourself? Besides, you know your vision already, what’s the point in hiring someone else who will make the website from their version of my own vision? You take to the internet and see that many other small companies tend to use Wix, Squarespace, or Shopify. The websites look okay… you think you can maybe work with this, for now at least. Well, lets take a look at the pros and cons of these website builders.

The Popular Choices – According to the Internet

These website builders can be a great place to start if you have no digital marketing experience. But, you may find that you are not completely satisfied, especially as your business starts to grow.

Wix

Wix can be a good introduction, especially for small businesses. They offer a wide range of cookie cutter templates to choose from for your e-commerce, portfolios, blogs, restaurants, scheduling, and other needs. You can even choose to have AI help you build your website.

Squarespace

Squarespace presents almost the same ideas as Wix, but tends to offer less of a learning curve. You are given templates to choose from but you will have less control over your website’s function. This is ultimately good for just getting your message out there in a brochure style for small e-commerce stores, for example.

Shopify

Geared for small to medium sized e-commerce stores, Shopify allows for both digital and physical products to be showcased. They advertise that you need no code experience, using the same functionality as Wix. You can choose from different themes and apps to create an online store and sell whatever you heart desires.

Here’s the Problems…

Again, these can be great options if you are new to digital marketing, but you will soon find that these templates and themes may not be versatile enough to grow with you. With each of these programs, the functionality that caters to memberships and/or subscription based websites is not fully available. Also, your website may look great while designing it on your desktop, but how does it look when you pull it up on your mobile devices? Is everything still proportioned correctly or are all of your text boxes and images smashing into each other?

As mentioned specifically with Shopify, you don’t have to deal with the code on these website builders. You may feel thankful until you realize that there is a ton of bloated code on the back end diverting your search engine effectiveness. What’s the point in going through all of this for your business if someone can’t find you on Google?!?
