Why Your Website Needs a Blog (Even if You Aren’t a Blogger)

You’ve tried the paid ads, posted to social media every day, and even started prioritizing reputation management. However, it still feels like something is missing. You pull out your cellphone and open the internet browser, typing your website’s URL in the search bar. Scrolling through, you think to yourself, “What am I missing?!” You open a new browser tab and look at your competition. They have basically the same information as you do on your site. Services, meet the team pages, a contact page, and…a blog? Why would someone in your industry need a blog on a regular basis? People don’t even read anymore and writing can be tough! Ugh. Well, if it’s what the business needs, it’s time to research why blogs are important and why your site needs a blog (even if you aren’t a blogger).

What is a Blog?

According to Britannica, a blog is “an online journal where an individual, group, or corporation presents a record of activities, thoughts or beliefs.” You’re reading a blog right now! It may look simple, but there are various different elements that go into each post. You need titles, subheadings, engaging content, pictures, sources, and much more. Blogs can be personal, educational, informational, for sales, and more.

The first blog was believed to be written in 1992 by Tim Berners-Lee, who was outlining and introducing the process of Web development to the world! However, it was not formally known as a ‘blog’ until early 1999, thanks to Peter Merholz. The idea of writing blogs online became so popular as computers became a staple in homes across the world that by October 2005, there were already around 19.6 million blogs. That number, of course, has greatly risen over the past two decades!

Why Are Blogs So Important?

So blogs are cool, but why are they important?

Blogs provide genuine, organic content for your business. Whether you work in a service industry like roofing or junk removal or you just own a small local shop selling handmade goods, you can benefit from blogs! Think of it as a way for people to see the behind the scenes of your business. It can also be another way to advertise (post your content to social media!) and build brand voice and recognition! You don’t have to give all of your secrets away because, let’s face it, your competition is probably looking at your blogs like you were looking at theirs. This brings us to our next point. What kind of information should you be putting in your blogs?

What Should My Blog Even Say?

You’ve come to terms that you would like to try blogging for your business. So how do you start? What if you run out of things to talk about a few weeks or months down the road? This is where your local digital marketing agency (ahem… InnoVationV) can help.

Don’t get us wrong, you can write your own blogs. However, they need to be specially optimized to rank high on SERPs (search engine results pages), which is one thing that our content writers and SEO team spend a lot of time analyzing. Your content also needs to be engaging for your target audience, that way they will want to read through it. What are some things people typically ask you about your business or your services? What is currently happening with your business or in your town? Your client base loves to feel involved!

Can I just use AI?

One thing our content and SEO teams see across the internet nowadays is the use of AI in content on websites. Can you just use AI to write things for you? Sure, but just because you can, doesn’t mean that you should.

Depending on where you do your research, the answer for “Does Google penalize AI generated content on websites” is up in the air. For now, at least. Search Engine Land stated as of October 2025 that Google is not inherently against AI content. But, there’s a catch. Google may not be against AI content, but it does reward original, high-quality content. Blogs or webpages that are created with AI that lack value are at risk of falling victim to Google’s spam policy on scaled content abuse. Similarly, if your content isn’t edited by a human and (most importantly, for you!) optimized for SEO, there is genuinely no benefit in having an AI written blog on your website.
